Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires driver Dalton Kellett for Andretti Autosport spent Tuesday afternoon kicking a soccer ball around on the Yard of Bricks. Kellett, along with three other Indy Lights and Verizon IndyCar Series drivers took on the soccer professionals of the Indy Eleven team to kickoff the North American Soccer League’s Championship held in Indianapolis this weekend.
The 10-minute game consisted of a four-on-four line-up with Zeke, the Indy Eleven team mascot in the goal for the professionals. Both teams put points on the board, including a goal made by Kellett. However, when the time expired, it was the Indy Eleven players who claimed victory.
“Getting the opportunity to play against the Indy Eleven players at the Speedway was a lot of fun,” said Kellett. “There is a strong sports presence in Indianapolis, so it is great to get out and support another local team and their athletes. I’ve played a few soccer games before but I don’t think any were as memorable as this, with the Yard of Bricks at the center of the pitch.”
Although the drivers did not claim victory, they each received a custom jersey and gave their support to the pro players as they wished the team good luck in the semifinal round of this weekend’s Championship playoff.
Kellett expressed: “The Indy Eleven guys have been doing really well in their season and I want to wish them good luck in their game this weekend!”
Indy Eleven will take on FC Edmonton of Alberta, Canada Saturday at 3 p.m. ET at the Michael A. Carroll Stadium in Downtown Indianapolis. The winner of this semifinal round will progress to the Finals and play the winner of the match between the New York Cosmos and the Rayo OKC.
