06.25.11 – Marco Andretti led Team Venom Energy Drink to victory circle at the Iowa Corn Indy 250, his first win since 2006. Andretti led a total of 42 laps, passing Tony Kanaan for the lead on lap 232.
“I can’t express how much tonight means,” Andretti said. “I have to thank Venom and my sponsors – I’m so glad they could be part of this. I knew going into today that when it came down to handling we’d be okay, so we worked hard to make the best of a 17th place start. I’d say we did it. The guys did a great job in the pits. They got me the lead back. We had some good racing with TK – tonight was good fun. This win feels every bit as good as my first one five years ago and hopefully we can start making this a habit.”
Andretti’s teammates Ryan Hunter-Reay and Danica Patrick also finished in the top 10 at Iowa Speedway. Team DHL/Circle K/Sun Drop Citrus Soda driver Hunter-Reay finished in eighth place, while Patrick drove the GoDaddy.com car to a 10th-place finish. Unfortunately No. 27 driver Mike Conway’s race did not go as planned, and finished in 24th place after being involved in an incident.
Andretti’s fellow Nazareth-based teammate, Sage Karam, also took the checkered flag at Iowa Speedway. Karam won the Star Mazda series race after qualifying on the pole position. This victory marked Karam’s second consecutive win.
Firestone Indy Lights driver Stefan Wilson ended a tough weekend with a strong effort in the Sukup 100, finishing in eighth place.
