8.6.13 – You may think it’s all down to the driver’s fitness levels or the engineer’s smarts, but a huge part of our success is due to our pit crews. With our partnership with IU Health and PitFit Training, our crews are given the proper conditioning to have the speed, strength and agility they need in order to be successful in the pits.
At our shop in Indianapolis, an IU Health trainer gives our guys a mini gym class throughout the week to train each of the IZOD IndyCar Series over-the-wall crew members to be able to perform at their best. Pit stops can range anywhere from four – eight seconds long… longer if something goes awry. Just think: in that amount of time, an IndyCar must be off the ground, four tires changed, fuel added, possible wing adjustments and put back on the ground before it’s able to speed back down pit lane and back on track. It may seem like an impossible feat, but we see it occur every weekend with our four crews.
As with anything we do, we are a team. Each over-the-wall crew consists of six team members that help make all those aforementioned things happen during a pit stop, and if one person has an error, it prolongs the entire team. IU Health’s training and tips to stay in shape allow our teams to have those flawless pit stops that enable us to win races and championships.
It takes much more than just the driver to make all the pieces fall correctly together on any race team. When you’re a championship winning team like Andretti Autosport, it’s even more important that all the pieces of the puzzle are working as one. In order for that to happen, everyone needs to be on their A-game. Thanks to IU Health and PitFit, we are able to do just that.
