4.1.2013 (via SpeedTV.com) – Heading into St. Petersburg I was confident. We had a great run at Circuit of the Americas a few weeks prior, and we had managed to find the incredible speed we had through preseason testing again.
St. Petersburg is similar to Sebring and MSR Houston where we have done most of our testing and have been so quick, so I knew we would have a quick ; it was just a matter of keeping up with the conditions and track changes over the weekend which is what we struggled with at COTA.
I raced on the streets of St. Petersburg last year in the USF2000 car, finished second in both races, so I was expecting to go out in the first session and be right up to speed. But wow! Street tracks are scary! I was surprised in the first session and had a few sketchy moments. It didn’t take too long to get up to speed and find my rhythm through the corners, but I was shocked about how tight, narrow and scary street tracks are on the first couple of laps!
The car was quick straight out of the box which was a fantastic start to the weekend. I always feel that when your car is good right away, it’s a lot easier to get the car right as the weekend progresses because you don’t have to make drastic changes.
