Shelby Blackstock to Pilot 2013 Pro Mazda Championship Entry for Andretti Autosport
12.10.12 – In a 2013 team launch last week Andretti Autosport announced Shelby Blackstock will drive the No. 28 Team Starstruck entry in the 2013 Pro Mazda Championship. This will mark Blackstock’s first year in the series, after finishing ninth in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship last season competing for Andretti Autosport.
"I am very excited for this next season in Pro Mazda with Andretti Autosport. After a rough USF2000 season, I hope to open next season on a good note and stay consistent,” said the Nashville, Tenn. native. “At the open test in Indianapolis, I adapted to the Pro Mazda very quickly and showed some speed. With off season testing and guidance from the Andretti Autosport team, I hope I can go find success in St. Petersburg."
Blackstock, 22, finished the 2012 USF2000 season accruing six top-10 finishes and recorded his career-best USF2000 finish of fourth during the series’ third round at Road America in August. The 2012 season marked his second season piloting an open-wheel car, after completing the Skip Barber National Championship in 2011. He finished the season fifth, after accruing two podium finishes.
The American-born racer, son of country music superstar Reba and husband/manager Narvel Blackstock, grew up with a fast-paced, high-adrenaline lifestyle. After studying for one year at the University of Arizona, he decided to pursue racing and started by attending a four-day racing school. Blackstock, nicknamed Shelbilly, made his official racing debut in 2010.
In addition to starting the Mazda Road to Indy ladder last season, Blackstock competed in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. He kicked off the 2012 season with a pole-winning run at Daytona International Raceway.
